What I did and Why I did it

This weekend I worked on Jay Gatsby’s poster. I got it to a point that I liked it, but when I got into class today for some reason I hated it. So, I completely re-did it. The child of two graphic designers in me just wasn’t happy with the overall composition of the poster, and I wasn’t really sure how to fix it, so I decided that starting clean was the best option. This weekend, I also watched a couple of lynda.com videos about photoshop in order to get more familiar with what the heck I am doing, so that I’m not just plunking around and pressing buttons until something looks good.

What I did and Why I did it

I spent about half the class trying to resolve my font issues, which was quickly solved when I learned how to do a drop-shadow in Photoshop! Yay! After that, I started searching Google for source images for the characters Nick and Jay. I want them to be in the same vein as the “vintage” style photo of Carey Mulligan as Daisy, but there aren’t a ton already styled like that. I will probably need to find an image and manipulate it to be more vintage-looking before I even put it into the 11×17 image. This weekend I’ll continue this work and start thinking about the words to use with the image.

Peer Review http://spring15blogs.tracigardner.com/2015/04/22/peer-review-27/ Wed, 22 Apr 2015 14:38:03 +0000 http://dotsdaisiesdraugr.wordpress.com/?p=139 ]]> April 22, 2015

In peer review, I received some great feedback on the first movie poster that I created, which was for Daisy. Overall, my partners really liked what I had done with my photo manipulation, but had a few issues with clarity and readability. In the coming days, I’ll keep an eye on that and see what I can do to make sure that readability isn’t lost due to the stylized font, but I love it so I’ll have to really work to figure something out!

I also hope to have two more posters done by Friday’s class. I’m aiming for five total, but will do more if I have time.

What I did and why I did it

I updated my Adobe Creative Suite! Yay! Now I can actually start putting together some images for the peer review on Wednesday.

Also, I put together a rough cut of the poster for Daisy, using images from the web. I spent a little bit of time going through dafont.com so that I could find a good art-deco font that would fit in with the whole 1920’s vibe of the book. Took me a few tries to find one that I liked, but I settled on Park Lane for now.

The Great Gatsby http://spring15blogs.tracigardner.com/2015/04/20/the-great-gatsby/ Mon, 20 Apr 2015 14:09:08 +0000 http://dotsdaisiesdraugr.wordpress.com/?p=133 ]]> This is the blog post for the April 17 class meeting online.

What I did & Why I did it

Today I watched the 2013 Baz Luhrmann version of The Great Gatsbyin order to have some more source material for my project. That’s pretty much it!

I worked out a timeline for my Remix a Story project. I also began work on deciding which characters from Gatsby I would focus on for the movie posters. I need to watch the newest movie again so that I can get a little more inspiration. I also am going to watch some InDesign and Illustrator tutorials tonight.

Why I Did It

The timeline will be helpful in making sure I’m staying on track and not getting too bogged down in the little tiny details. Also, I got a head start on my first timeline goal so that I can worry more about the actual creation of the project.

Martin (aka “Game of Thrones”) and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I will take inspiration from the ASOIAF tradition of personal heraldry and use the Adobe Creative Suite to design sigils for characters in Gatsby.

I will also take inspiration from the advertisements for the Game of Thrones TV series.

My final project will consist of several posters/banners for the characters from Gatsby, which I will post onto my blog. I also hope to be able to print out the posters for added impact while I present.

I bet they never thought anyone would ever see it again http://spring15blogs.tracigardner.com/2015/03/02/i-bet-they-never-thought-anyone-would-ever-see-it-again/ Mon, 02 Mar 2015 15:54:00 +0000 http://dotsdaisiesdraugr.wordpress.com/?p=86 ]]> This is the blog post for the March 2, 2015 class meeting.

Today we examined an Interrogate an Interface project from last year in a group. It was neat to see how someone approached the project that I myself am going to be completing in just a few short weeks. One thing that I noticed for the essay on “Editorially” was that, while being a well-written and well-executed project, I didn’t notice how to find the rest of it until asking where it was. The web design of how it was displayed was poorly-executed. When I do my project, I will make sure to have someone go through my pages and give me feedback on its user-friendliness. It would be a shame for all that work to go to waste if someone couldn’t find where the next portion of the project was.
