So for today, we had to examine our belongings and categorize what we had into the five main modes of communication–Visual, Aural, Gestural, Spatial, Linguistic. I actually found it a bit difficult at first to determine what should go where. I think everything I put on my list was visual in some way, but I definitely found that some modes of communication were harder to identify. The only object I had that I think could qualify would be the video camera (or perhaps more specifically one of the video clips on it.) It obviously captures both video and audio, but the actor or subject in the clip may communicate gesturally (in their actions) or spatially (by their position in the room).

I got a bit creative with some of my objects, and a few might be a stretch. I thought that the first aid kit in my backpack could qualify as spatial because of how/where each medical supply is packed into the kit. Similarly, I thought that my gloves could be considered gestural (if someone were pointing).

Ultimately, this exercise helped me to realize that nearly everything falls into multiple modes of communication and thinking about some of the more unusual ones can be a great source of inspiration.
