My experiences with autocomplete have been generally good. I have been using autocomplete on smart devices since 2007 and to be frank, it has been quite a roller coaster of a ride. Initially, google had a generic autocorrect that would correct words and every time you wanted a ‘replacement’ word instead of it (ex: they change ‘shit’ to ‘shut’ when you really wanted the first one). Which was frustrating because essentially you had to correct autocorrect. As Android and iOS have matured they have transferred to a more ‘learning’ feature that works very well. You want to write ‘hahah’ instead of ‘haha’, simply type the word in and have it replace ‘haha’. Simple as that.
A frustrating thing with autocorrect is it is poorly implemented with a fully functional laptop keyboard. Ideally a user would be more accurate when they can use all their fingers to type, but I have found with myself and others, this is not necessarily the case. I really wish that things like Gmail and Word would autocorrect errors for me. For example, if I type in ‘autocoorect’ on my phone, it will change it to ‘autocorrect’, but if I do that on my computer it will underline it and say it is incorrect, but not actually change it unless I take the time to go back, right-click the word, and select one of the suggested words.
Overall autocorrect is a great program and it has saved me from embarrassing errors multiple times!
