What Makes a Good Remix?
A lot of the remix examples had strong aspects but in different ways. The Three Little Scholars Broadcast and the Rapunzel remix both had humour and a lot of personality in them which audiences will definitely respond well to. Everyone loves to laugh.
The story of the Gay Rights Movement told through the song ‘Same Love’ by Macklemore was incredibly powerful and I liked that they used a relative historical event. Even though the legalization of gay marriage is a relatively recent event, they creators did very well to tell the story and struggle from the very beginning and using a wide timeline while also keeping it concise.
What Makes A Good Digital Story?
My two favorite examples of a remix were Belle’s Fakebook and the Drunk History story of the Boston Tea Party because of the creativity of the ideas. I thought that they were very original compared to some of the others like the news stories. Belle’s Fakebook had a good mix of linguistic and visual modes of communication which I think it is important. For example, The Once Upon A Times creator clearly spent a lot of time and put a lot of effort into it but it’s all linguistic and I don’t really want to just read another version of fairy tales that they came up with. The use of voice-over in the Boston Tea Party remix was a nice mix-up from other projects and was a strong part of it.
Stories I am Considering
For my remix I really want to do something different like a classic American short story that people know of but maybe haven’t read like Rip Van Winkle of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. History also really interests me, especially WWII, so possible a particular Pearl Harbor or Normandy Beach story.
